Turning The Tide

Veer Mehta is a dedicated marine conservationist and innovator who founded "Turning the Tide," a data-driven initiative that leverages machine learning to detect marine pollution in real-time. Through this project, he has organized cleanup drives across India's coastal states, involving over 400 million residents. Collaborating with the National Institute of Ocean Technology (NIOT) and the Ministry of Earth Sciences (MoES), Veer advocates for enhancing marine health and conservation. His groundbreaking early warning system uses Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN) to monitor water pollution, providing timely alerts to authorities and communities, thereby reducing pollution impacts. Veer also led the RiverWatch initiative, mapping water quality in Goan rivers and engaging local fishermen to promote sustainable practices. He presented his work at the World Ocean Science Congress 2024, becoming the youngest speaker in the event’s history, where he addressed over 4,000 delegates, emphasizing the need for data-driven solutions for ocean conservation.
